Grinth of Trithereon

The following is a character background I created for a play-by-post (PBP) D&D game that I joined a few years back. On reviewing this old draft, I see there’s a good deal of word-smithing I would want to do, but there’s enough meat on the bones of this character to further develop should the need arise. In the Greyhawk setting, Trithereon is a god of liberty and retribution, an appropriate diety for an adventurer seeking to bring an end to slavers in the classic D&D module “A1-Slave Pits of the Undercity”.

Personality- Grinth’s difficult life has left its mark on the young cleric. His countenance is typically grim and he is slow to trust, having been sold into labor as a youth. He is utterly devoted to Trithereon’s cause and will go to great lengths to aid those caught beneath an oppressor’s yoke. He understands that change can be difficult and will pragmatically consider each situation in order to make the best long term decision. He understands the need for subterfuge and will do whatever is needed if the end result will earn someone’s freedom.

Appearance: Tall and broad shouldered, Grinth presents a stern face to the world. Years of forced labor have taken their toll and he appears older than his 25 years would suggest. His Suloise heritage is evident by the shock of blonde hair that descend about his shoulders and his piercing blue eyes that constantly seek out tyranny and any that opposed an individual’s freedom.

Background: Grinth was born into a large human family with significant money problems in Port Toli. At an early age his parents “sold” Grinth to a Mercenary Order to pay their debts. Grinth was quite young and has little memory of his life before being part of this military group. He grew up quickly, learning the skills of battle from veteran warriors. It wasn’t happy life, but because of his natural skill and abilities he became a good soldier.

After some time his group was sold to a wealthy merchant where they were used to collect debts and “bring in” individuals who might need further “motivation”. One fateful day, Grinth was sent to bring in a merchant who was not cooperating. The merchant begged Grinth to not bring him in as he feared for his life. “You have a choice! You don’t have to do this!” the man yelled as Grinth dragged him from his home before the man’s screaming wife and children. The pleas fell on deaf ears as Grinth did his duty and he handed the man over to his employer’s less savory henchmen to be dealt with.

Later that evening Grinth discovered that the man had died and his family had been picked up and sold into slavery. For some reason, this event affected Grinth greatly. Repressed emotions surfaced. Guilt. Remorse. Anger. He didn’t like who he’d become and felt he needed to change and escape. Not knowing what to do, he fled north on the first merchant ship leaving port.

He traveled far, always fearing he would be hunted down by his old group. Eventually he found himself in a small temple of Trithereon in the great city of Greyhawk and it was there that he finally found refuge. He was immediately drawn to the teachings of Trithereon. No longer bound by a strict military order, freedom took on a new meaning to him. It did not take long for the young ex-mercenary to become an acolyte of the church.

Much time has passed since his flight from Port Toli and Grinth has become a trusted adventuring cleric of Trithereon. Still, he struggles with the ghosts of those he hurt so long ago. He’s determined to free any who are bound by slavery and oppression, and hopes to find some peace for himself by righting the wrongs of his past.
